New Campaign Sparks Push for Electric Vehicles

More than 50,000 UK drivers have already saved thousands by switching to electric vehicles, as the government today launches a new national campaign encouraging motorists to make the move.
The Department for Transport (DfT) has unveiled its “Get that electric feeling” campaign, aimed at boosting electric vehicle (EV) uptake by highlighting savings of up to £3,750 on a new electric car through the Electric Car Grant, alongside annual running cost savings of up to £1,400.
Launched across TV, radio and digital channels today (19 January 2026), the campaign also points to the UK’s rapidly expanding charging infrastructure, with more than 87,000 public charge points now available nationwide.
The initiative marks the government’s latest effort to support British industry and stimulate demand for EVs, sending what it says is a clear signal that there has never been a better time for drivers to switch. By increasing consumer uptake, ministers say the campaign will give manufacturers and supply chains the confidence to invest, protect skilled jobs and support economic growth.
The campaign follows strong early take-up of the Electric Car Grant, which has already helped more than 50,000 drivers reduce the upfront cost of purchasing a new electric vehicle.
Looking ahead, the government says charging will become even more accessible, with plans to roll out an additional 100,000 local public chargers over the coming years. Funding and planning reforms will also make it easier and cheaper for households without private driveways to install home chargers, allowing drivers to charge their vehicles for as little as 2p per mile.
Aviation, Maritime and Decarbonisation Minister, Keir Mather, said: “Over 50,000 drivers have made savings of up to £3,750 off a new EV and £1,400 a year on running costs. Our campaign is here to show millions of Brits the benefits of making the switch, which could save their family budget thousands. With over 87,000 public chargers across the UK and thousands more on the way, our message is clear – going electric has never been easier and under this government, you can save thousands when you do.”
Dominic Phinn, Head of Transport at Climate Group, said: “The UK has positioned itself as a frontrunner in a fiercely competitive global race towards clean road transport. But myths and misinformation are holding the nation back from taking the next leap.
Major UK businesses, like members of our EV100 network, have been leading on fleet electrification, but are warning that a much bigger perception shift in the population is now needed for them to keep driving the transition.
