Britain is putting £7.8bn behind a new space strategy designed to protect the country from growing threats in orbit, strengthen national security and turn space technology into a driver of economic growth. The government’s new UK Space Strategy, unveiled on Tuesday, brings together the country’s space, defence, science and industrial ambitions under a single plan.
Ministers say the strategy will not only strengthen Britain’s ability to monitor and respond to threats in space, but also support thousands of skilled jobs and improve everyday services, from mobile coverage to rail connectivity. The investment comes as space becomes an increasingly contested domain, with satellites playing a critical role in communications, navigation, defence and the wider economy.
Britain prepares for a new space race
A major focus of the strategy is Space Domain Awareness – the ability to monitor satellites, rockets, debris and other objects orbiting Earth. The government is committing £149m to the European Space Agency’s Vigil mission and a further £85m to the National Space Operations Centre. The aim is to give Britain earlier warnings of satellite collisions, hostile activity and potentially disruptive solar storms.
That capability matters well beyond the space industry. Satellites underpin many of the services people use every day, including communications, navigation and parts of the energy and transport infrastructure. The government is also allocating £880m to space control and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities, allowing Britain to better track military activity and potential threats to satellites. Another £2.8bn will be directed towards connectivity, including the Connectivity in Low Earth Orbit programme and SKYNET defence communications. The latter is particularly important for the Armed Forces, helping maintain secure communications wherever British personnel are operating around the world.
From military satellites to better phone signals
The strategy is not solely about defence. Ministers say investment in advanced satellite communications could eventually mean more reliable connectivity for rural communities and fewer mobile signal blackspots on trains. That reflects the increasingly blurred line between space technology, national security and everyday life. Britain’s space sector is currently valued at £18.6bn and supports more than 55,000 skilled jobs, according to the government. The strategy is intended to expand that economic footprint while helping reindustrialise the UK through investment in advanced technologies.
Business, Innovation, Science and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said space was becoming a new frontier for both economic and military competition. The government, he said, wants Britain to strengthen its ability to launch satellites, detect threats and protect critical services while allowing UK companies to capitalise on new commercial opportunities. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting similarly argued that Britain’s security increasingly depends on its ability to operate freely in space and, when necessary, protect British and allied space assets.
£40m push to repair satellites in orbit
One of the more futuristic elements of the strategy is a £40m investment in in-orbit servicing, assembly and manufacturing. The technology could allow satellites to be repaired and maintained in space rather than simply abandoned when they are damaged by debris, solar storms or hostile interference. It could also help remove dangerous objects from orbit. The government believes the same technology could open the door to new products manufactured in the unique environment of space, including advanced semiconductors, pharmaceuticals and drug-delivery technologies.
Rockets, Mars and Britain’s space ambitions
The strategy also includes £148m for European rocket programmes and £30m for SaxaVord Spaceport in Shetland. The investment is intended to increase Britain’s ability to launch satellites while supporting jobs and reducing reliance on launch facilities overseas. A further £163m will support space science and exploration missions, including the Rosalind Franklin Mars Rover, which was built in Stevenage.
Other commitments include £57m from the Department for Transport to improve rail connectivity, £190m from UK Research and Innovation for astronomy and space science, and £9m from the Met Office to strengthen space-weather forecasting. The government is also promising a new approach to buying and developing space technology, beginning with satellite communications. The intention is to give British companies greater opportunities to win government contracts, strengthen domestic supply chains and speed up delivery.

The new strategy formally replaces the 2021 National Space Strategy and forms part of the government’s wider Modern Industrial Strategy. Alongside the investment programme, ministers are proposing changes to space regulations aimed at reducing costs, encouraging responsible operators and making it easier for British businesses to invest in technologies ranging from satellite servicing to lunar exploration. Industry groups have broadly welcomed the announcement. UKspace said the strategy offered an opportunity for greater collaboration across the sector, while ADS Group highlighted the importance of long-term certainty for companies making major investment decisions. The Space Academic Network also welcomed the government’s cross-departmental approach, stressing the importance of sustained investment in research, talent and technology. The Earth & Space Sustainability Initiative welcomed the emphasis on security alongside regulation and responsible space operations. For the Met Office, meanwhile, the strategy recognises the growing importance of space-based observations to weather forecasting, climate intelligence and preparations for extreme weather.
The bigger ambition is clear: Britain wants space to become more than a strategic asset. It wants it to become an engine for defence, industry, technology and jobs on Earth.
