The Prime Minister held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing today, marking a key moment in the UK leader’s visit to China.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister expressed his appreciation for the warm reception he received and said both leaders reaffirmed their intention to develop a stable, long-term and strategic relationship between the two countries. He said the partnership should be focused on delivering mutual benefits, while recognising the importance of open and honest engagement.

The leaders agreed to strengthen cooperation in areas where their interests align, while continuing frank discussions on issues where differences remain. The Prime Minister raised a number of matters of concern to the United Kingdom, emphasising the importance of constructive dialogue in managing disagreements.

The Prime Minister is travelling with a delegation of almost 60 major British businesses and cultural organisations. He said he hoped the visit would help create new partnerships and unlock fresh opportunities for UK organisations operating in China.

He added that boosting growth and prosperity at home depends in part on engaging with the world’s major powers overseas, and said he was looking forward to continuing his programme during the remainder of the visit.
